Cause of Hair Loss in Women and Preventive Measures

A common syndrome that happens to most women is hair loss, which occurs periodically and sometimes overtime. Hair loss could also happen when androgen hormones accumulate around the follicular unit grafts, resulting in gradual graft loss over time. In fact, 50% of women have been estimated to experience noticeable hair loss.

In general, between 50 and 100 single hairs are shed per day, which is part of a natural balance, and some strands fall out while others grow in. When the balance is interrupted as the hair falls out and less hair grows, hair loss happens. Additionally, female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) is significantly the primary cause of hair loss in women, which affects about one-third of susceptible women.

Who Are More Susceptible To Hair Loss?

Almost any woman can be affected by hair loss. However, it is usually more common in:

  • Menopausal women
  • Women older than 40
  • Women who have just had babies
  • Women who often have hairstyles that pull on the hair (like tight ponytails or tight braids) or use harsh chemicals on their hair
  • Women who have undergone chemotherapy and those affected by other medications

What Can Possibly Cause A Hair Loss?

  • Hairstyles. Perhaps the most common cause of losing hair is how women tend to treat their hair. Hairstyles tend to damage hair as some women like to pull and tug at the hair and use clips and bands that might pull hair out right from the roots. Additionally, with regular usage of heat-based styling tools and chemicals in the form of hair care products, hair’s actual integrity reduces, leading to breakage.
  • Washing Hair Incorrectly. Other causes of hair loss are due to not washing the hair as often throughout the week and not washing the hair properly. Both cases aggravate hair loss since different impurities become concentrated in the scalp, such as sebum produced by the sebaceous glands, local desquamation, hair product residues, and city pollution. All these create a barrier that blocks the hair follicles, preventing the growth of both existing and new hair.
  • Diet. Having a healthy body which healthy hair can rely upon, also means eating the right foods. However, the hair does not get the nutrition it needs when women go on radical diets for weight loss or eat more to keep their bodies in shape.
  • Vitamin deficiency. Hair loss can happen when not eating right or having an inherent vitamin deficiency. These deficiencies can lead to the weakening of hair from the roots, which leads to breakage. If a woman wants long, strong, and beautiful hair, include foods containing all the essential vitamins and minerals for faster hair growth.
  • Stress. When going through recurrent periods of stress in personal or professional life, an increase in a hormone called cortisol in the body happens. It is responsible for several problems in large amounts, such as gastritis, insomnia, acne, and even hair loss. Indeed, it is important to slow down, get involved in physical activities, and have a balanced diet to contain this hormone and prevent it from damaging the immune system and your quality of life in the long run.
  • Medical conditions. A hair loss could happen to people who have had medical procedures, like radiation or chemotherapy, or have been in traumas (serious accidents). However, the hair loss doesn’t happen permanently. The hair loss could reduce or stop once the procedure is completed and the medical condition has been resolved.
  • Other hair conditions. Androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata conditions can also lead to hair loss. In contrast, the first one leads to drastic hair loss on the scalp, and the latter is losing hair all over the body. However, these conditions can be diagnosed only by an expert doctor.

What Are The Treatments Of Hair Loss?

The course of action to be suggested will depend on how extreme the hair loss is. For instance, if the hair loss has just started, non-invasive procedures can be considered. Nonetheless, below are among the most popular procedures:

  • Medication. One easiest way to handle hair loss initially is through medication. Minoxidil can be purchased over the counter as a medical remedy for female hair loss, unlike Finasteride (which must be taken orally), which needs a prescription. When consulting a professional, they will suggest a better course of action for the case.
  • LaserThe laser is becoming the go-to technique for initial hair loss, which is quite effective. Laser’s low-level therapy can be done using a laser comb or similar machines, wherein the intensity can be set as per the requirement. In fact, studies have shown that regular laser therapy sessions can reduce hair loss and actually improve hair growth.
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The PRP hair treatment is globally recognized as one of the most effective, minimally invasive methods to tackle hair loss. In the PRP procedure, the blood is extracted from the body and used a centrifuge, while the platelet-rich plasma is separated. It then promotes hair growth and leads to a definite reduction of hair fall.
  • Hair Transplant. Only in the most severe hair loss cases does one need to consider a hair transplant. This procedure is not suggested on a whim by any good doctor because several criteria need to be met before considering a transplant. In this situation, there have to be clear donor and recipient areas, and there have to be enough grafts for the hair loss to stabilize.

How To Prevent Hair Loss?

Although not all types of hair loss can be prevented, taking steps to help keep the hair healthy can help minimize it. Hence, to avoid the loss of hair, below are the recommended actions:

  • Avoid hairstyles that pull hair tightly.
  • Eat a healthy diet that includes enough proteins, iron, and calories.
  • Find ways to cope with stress.
  • During chemotherapy treatment, try a cooling cap.
  • Manage conditions such as thyroid disease and others that could result in hair loss.
